The most common cause is the power supply cable being stepped on and bending the plug so much that the power socket inside the laptop is ripped out of the motherboard.
A sure sign of a power socket being damaged is that when you jiggle the power plug the laptop loses power (you will notice the battery charging light go on and off).
A power socket fix is not an easy one
The whole laptop has to be stripped to the motherboard in most cases and a new power socket has to be soldered onto it. This is a timely and very fine excercise which should not be attempted if you have no laptop
repair experience as you can cause in some cases terminal damage to your laptop!
OUR TIP
To prevent this problem from happening in the first place always secure the power supply cable in a way that nobody can accidently step on it.
Keep pets away from power supply cables as they love to chew on them!
Yes, we can fix just the damaged cable on a power supply too!
Below are some images of typical damaged laptop power jacks.
This is an image of a typical power socket mounted on a motherboard.
It usually is soldered into the motherboard with 4-5 joints, that's why it cannot take a lot of punishment.
The internal part of this Sony Vaio power jack is completely broken off.
This socket has to be replaced with a new one.
In this case the whole jack has completely collapsed inside the casing.
The only way to fix this problem is a new socket installation.
The following are some sample videos from YouTube showing how a laptop power socket/ jack is replaced.
Our clear recommendation is that if you are not an electronics specialist
with soldering and desoldering experience:
DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS JOB YOURSELF AS YOU
WILL CAUSE TERMINAL DAMAGE TO YOUR LAPTOP!
