With a standard screen on older models, it is possible to replace just the external glass and it is not too expensive, as well as the LCD as it's a separate part to the glass.

With the new skinny models (from late 2012) without the DVD drive, the LCD is manufactured as a complete assembly and is glued into the body of the iMac.

These screen assemblies are very expensive to replace and there's an additional cost of regluing the screen assembly into the body (original transfer tape has to be used).
